Pawiak is a prison built in 1835. During World War II in 1939 it was turned into a German Gestapo prison and then it became part of the Warsaw concentration camp. There were 100000 men and 20000 women. They were living in revolting and terrible conditions. Every day people could eat only something about 750 calories. Because of it most of them were ill and sometimes they were dying of hunger.
Gestapo were employing tortures on prisoners and they were shooting them.

Irena Sendler was also prisoner of Pawiak during World War II. She was undergoing torturesand than convicted for death. Fortunately, Żegota managed to rescue her.
